Teacher Spotlight: Celeste Hankins

Currently Teaching:

3rd Grade

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your background, your interests, etc.

I began my teaching career at SIA, teaching 4th and 5th Grades for 3 years before transferring to Rolling Fork Elementary as a 6th-grade teacher. There I also taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades, my favorite grade to teach. In all, I've taught school for 38 years!

I am married to my high school sweetheart, David Hankins, a farmer in our area. We have a daughter, Haley, married to Jason Bush and a son, Tyler, married to Lacy Darnell Hankins. We have five grandchildren, Anne Riley, Max, Elissa, Drake, Mary Myers, and one to arrive soon.

Do you have a favorite book? How about a favorite movie?

My favorite childhood book was Go, Dog, Go! Some of my favorite authors are Francine Rivers, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Karen Kingsbury plus many more. My favorite movie is The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins!

If you could wake up in the morning and start a new adventure, what would it be?

I would love to travel the United States visiting our national parks and stay in the road at flea markets and antique malls.

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about being in the teaching field is loving the students and helping them build confidence in themselves. I love to watch them get excited about what we are learning!

When you're not working, how do you spend your time?

I love to read, spend time working in the yard, and seeing my grandchildren. A trip to the beach is always a good thing!

What might we be surprised to know about you?

There's not much that everybody doesn't already know about me! Maybe that I played clarinet in the band at Sharkey from 7th to 12th grade and that I started playing the piano and organ for church when I was about 15 years old!
